The Nisqually side of Mount Rainier offers trails for every ability, from paved family loops to lung-burning meadow climbs. Because Paradise sits at roughly 5,400 feet, you gain the alpine quickly — but always come prepared for fast-changing mountain weather. Here are standout hikes, arranged from easiest to most demanding.
Easy Walks
Trail of the Shadows (Longmire) — 0.7 mile loop
A flat, family-friendly loop past mineral springs, a historic cabin and reflecting meadows. Interpretive signs make it a gentle introduction to the mountain's human and natural history.
Nisqually Vista (Paradise) — 1.2 mile loop
A paved, gently rolling loop through subalpine meadows to overlooks of the Nisqually Glacier. Superb in wildflower season and manageable for most visitors.
Moderate Half-Day Hikes
Comet Falls — about 3.8 miles round trip
A steady climb through forest to one of the park's tallest and most dramatic waterfalls, plunging roughly 300 feet. The trailhead is on the Paradise road; expect a rewarding workout.
Alta Vista & the lower Skyline meadows (Paradise)
Short but steep paved-then-dirt trails climb into the heart of the wildflower meadows with continuous summit views. Great for a big payoff without a full-day commitment.
Strenuous Classics
Skyline Trail Loop (Paradise) — about 5.5 miles
The signature day hike of the Nisqually side. The loop climbs to Panorama Point for sweeping views of the summit, the Nisqually Glacier and, on clear days, distant Cascade volcanoes. Snow lingers into summer on the upper sections — check conditions and carry traction early in the season.
Hike Smart
- Layers and rain gear, always — weather turns fast at elevation.
- Sturdy footwear and the ten essentials for longer routes.
- Start early in summer; Paradise parking fills by mid-morning on clear days.
- Stay on trail to protect fragile meadows — the blooms take decades to recover.
For detailed, up-to-date trail descriptions and recent trip reports, the Washington Trails Association hiking guide is excellent, and the NPS hiking page lists current closures. When you have earned it, cool off at a waterfall or head back to the cabin for the hot tub.
